My main goal in art is for the students have fun, embrace art, try new things and think in innovative ways. I've been teaching for 21 years and I think it's important to stay teachable and open to change. I love to get messy and have fun in my classes and I certainly hope my students do the same. I try to set up my lessons to include success, but the process is more important to me than the product they leave with.

“Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody.” -Kid President

If you walk into my classroom you will see the words YOU MATTER in large black letters on the wall. I strive to create a classroom environment that feels like family. Students in my classroom will often refer to our class as a school family. I believe every student has value, is an important contributor to the group, and truly matters. Now in my 20th year teaching 2nd grade, I feel just as passionate about kids as I did my first year. I thrive on instilling the love of learning and the love of self into all kids I am lucky enough to teach.

My husband, Kyle, and I moved to Clear Lake in 1995. We have two sons, Parker (freshman at The University of Iowa) and Cael (CLHS sophomore).

My experiences as an elementary music student inspired me to start my career in elementary music education. Through the efforts of my music teacher, I was given the opportunity to participate in an honor choir at a district, regional and state level. I looked forward to music class as a way to express my individuality and creativity. It is my goal to inspire creativity in my students through various musical activities. Together we can develop a community where we are able to learn and grow through our love of music.

Finn, Lesley

Elementary Special Education

My name is Lesley Finn and I am a teacher at Clear Creek Elementary. I began my career in 1989 in Minnesota after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education and an emphasis in special education. After 2 years I moved back to my hometown of Mason City where I worked at John Adams Middle School for a year and then transferred over to Roosevelt Elementary, where I worked for 10 years. It was during this time that I met and married my husband who now owns a small computer company in Clear Lake. It was also during these years that we were blessed with 3 boys. Two of my boys attend CLHS while the oldest is working on his college degree at NIACC. Following my work at Roosevelt, I took some time off to be a stay at home mom for 2 years. When I decided to go back to work I was fortunate to be hired as a teacher to work at Sunset. Later I moved to Lincoln where I taught first grade for 3 years and my time at Clear Creek has been spent teaching various levels of special education. I feel very fortunate for all the teaching experiences I have had. I know that I have learned as much from my students as I have taught them.

I think it is important to realize that every person has a gift or talent they can share with the world. Some of those gifts are easy to recognize but those that aren’t can make the most impact on the world. Learning empathy and compassion is so important these days and our kids at Clear Creek teach this and learn this from one another daily. Social skills, emotional skills and independence are something I get to be part of teaching everyday in my job. I love this because I have so much help from the wonderful, compassionate student body at Clear Creek. I also get to find creative ways to let my students show how smart they truly are. They are proof that just because you don’t communicate the way everyone else does or you don’t move and look like everyone else, you can still learn to read, write, do math and so many more things that people may not realize. My philosophy is not to focus on what it seems a person can’t do but instead to recognize what they can do and use that to help them learn.

Fifth Grade Reading

I have taught upper elementary for over 25 years and currently teach reading for all of the fifth graders at Clear Creek. I believe that all children are special and can accomplish great things with the support of their parents and teachers. No one is perfect, and making mistakes is an important part of learning. We never stop learning! I believe that children who don’t like reading just haven’t found the right book, and I can help them find it. Every child makes an impact and difference in my life, and I hope to do the same to theirs.

Helping kids to realize their potential and to use it to change the world is my passion! In 2015 I found a home at Clear Creek, and I'm so thankful for the opportunity I have every day to impact the lives of the students here. What I love most about teaching young learners is the joy and energy with which they come to school every morning. My goal as a teacher is to capitalize on that energy and help them build a life-long love of learning. Outside of school, I am a mom to Gabriel and a wife to Kyle. We love to spend time playing, laughing, and reading together!

I love teaching. Seeing 1st graders learn to or improve upon their reading is completely gratifying, but seeing them make good decisions and treat others honestly and with kindness is even better. I spend much of my free time with my family; we like to do simple  things like grill or just watch a good movie, but I also enjoy exercising, specifically kayaking and biking. My room is always open to visitors; stop by anytime.

After teaching Music for five years, and 3rd grade for one, I have really enjoyed my tenure in the 4th Grade! I continue to incorporate as much music as possible into my classroom, and make learning fun! Life's too short not to have fun in everything we do! Speaking of having FUN....I actually worked at Walt Disney World for a few years after graduating from college. I was a "special friend" to Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and several other characters! It was one of my many DREAMS COME TRUE! Now, I'm encouraging my students every day to ALSO reach for their DREAMS!

Becoming an educator has been a dream of mine since I was in Kindergarten. This is my first year teaching, and I am so happy to be a part of Clear Lake Community School District.

I completed my undergraduate work at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and received my degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education with a Literacy Education minor.

I attended Clear Lake School District, and I am thrilled and honored to be back. I am the second oldest of five. A fun fact is that I have a twin sister who is attending UNI majoring in Speech and Language Pathology. In my spare time, I enjoy dancing, baking, and spending time with my family. Along with teaching, I am the assistant dance team coach for our high school dance team.

My main goal is to make math fun, interesting, and relevant to the real world.  This year is the 4th year of the 5th graders creating and running their own restaurant.  We started this restaurant and it has been a success each and every year. Along with teaching, I also coach JV boys basketball and varsity softball.  I love coaching in the fact that it allows me to make connections with students outside of the classroom.  It is amazing to see students in 5th grade, and then see their growth as I coach them in high school.  Clear Lake is a great town and school.  I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work here every day.

I have been teaching in Clear Lake since 1992.  Wow, time has flown by! It is awesome and a privilege to work with future leaders of the community. In my classroom, I encourage students to be positive members of our school as well as in the classroom.  I try to model that myself as a teacher with the students and staff members.  We are definitely about collaboration in science and social studies, so they are not only working on academics but also being able to collaborate with each other on projects.  This will hopefully build the foundation for them to be successful in their future, whether at school or in life. I am so happy to have the opportunity to work with the students and parents of Clear Creek and Clear Lake.  It is a wonderful place to be, and I am always excited to work with everyone here.  Go Lions!
