JV Lions Fall to Humboldt

On Monday night September 26 the Lion J.V. football team lost to Humboldt 14-7. Humboldt controlled the ball on offense most of the night. The Wildcats took the opening drive of the game down for a touchdown and used up most of the first quarter clock. The Lions had a good second quarter drive set up by Alex Gonzalez 44 yard run. But the Wildcats would turn back the the Lion threat with an interception on their own one yard line and it was 7-0 Humboldt at the half. In the third quarter the Lions had another good drive that would end on the Humboldt 1 yard line as the Lions were stopped and turned it over on downs. Humboldt would score in the 4th quarter on a long run and back came the Lions. Chase Lester hit Zach Merfeld on a big 32 yard pass play to set up Carter Hand’s 1 yard plunge for the touchdown. Logan Kracht’s PAT was good and the Lions still had a shot, behind 14-7. The Lion defense could not get the Wilcats stopped and ran out of time, losing 14-7. Treslyn Allison led the defense with 10 tackles from his linebacker position and Christian Paulsen had 6 and Blake Kelso had 5 tackles. On offense Alex Gonzalez had 75 yards on 7 carries. Carter Hand had 4 carries for 24 yards and the lone Lion touchdown. The next JV game will be at home versus Ballard of Huxley on Monday, October 3rd. Game time is at 5:30.

JV Lions Defeat Forest City

On Thursday night Sept 1st the J.V. Lions defeated Forest City 16-0. The Lion defense showed up big time and offense got enough points to get the victory. The first quarter would be scoreless and in the 2nd the Lions scored first on an 8 yard touchdown run by Connor Nosbisch. Logan Kracht’s pat was good and the Lions would lead 7-0 at the half. In the 3rd quarter Treslyn Allison made a great play from his linebacker position to get a safety for the Lions and they were up 9-0. Nosbisch would score again in the 4th and the pat was good for the final of 16-0 in favor of the Lions. Nosbisch carried 9 times for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Abbas threw for 109 yards to add to the offense. Defensively Steven Akers had five tackles and three sacks. John Glynn added two sacks and Treslyn Allison had 7 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. The J.V. Lions next game is Monday night September 12th against Nevada at 5:30 at Lions field.

Varsity Reserve topples Charles City

On Monday night August 27 the Varsity Reserve Lion Football team defeated Charles City 27-6 at Charles City. Jack Abbas and Alex Webb got the scoring going for the Lions as they connected on a 35 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and the Lions were up 7-0 after the pat by Logan Kracht. The Comets would score a quick one as the Lions fumbled on their own 20 yard line a little later and the pat was no good making it 7-6 Lions. Blake Kelso would score on 1 yard plunge set up by a beautiful punt block by Brian Larsen and it would be 14-6 at the half. In the second half the Lions kept the scoring going with a 42 yard run from Aaron Boeshart and a nice 5 yard run from Alex Gonzalez to finish the scoring out at 27-6. On defense the Lions were led by Carson Farmer who had 11 tackles and an interception. Zach Bredlow added 10 tackles. Steven Akers had a strong game with six tackles and Christian Paulsen added six. The next varsity reserve game will be Monday night September 19th at home versus Mason City.

Lions JV open with a win at Charles City

On Thursday night the J.V. Lions football team traveled down the Avenue of the Saints to Charles City to kick off the 2011 high school football season. The Lions came home victorious with a hard earned 34-20 victory. The Lions got the ball first and on their first play from scrimmage Jack Abbas connected with Alex Webb for a 55 yard gain. The Lions would take it deep into Comet territory before fumbling a scoring chance away. The Lion D held Charles City for a three and out and a punt. Christian Paulsen had a beautiful return to the Comet 10. On the next play Blake Kelso would take it in for the touchdown and Logan Kracht’s extra point made it 7-0 Lions. The Comets would take the kick off back for a touchdown and miss the extra point. 7-6 Lions at the end of 1. Blake Kelso would score on another 1 yard run in the second quarter and Connor Nosbisch hit pay dirt on a 65 yard sweep around the left end and the Lions were up 21-14 at the half. In the third quarter Jack Abbas hit Zach Merfeld on a beautiful 20 yard touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone and they started to take control in the 3rd quarter 27-14. Abbas would finish with a touchdown run from 1 yard out in the fourth quarter to finish the Lions scoring. A late Comet touchdown made the final 34-20 in favor of the Lions. Jack Abbas threw for 148 yards on 5 of 10 passing with one touchdown. Rushing well for the Lions was Connor Nosbisch who had 9 carries for 89 yards and touchdown. Alex Gonzalez had seven carries for 60 yards and Blake Kelso would finish with 14 carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions totaled 213 yards on the ground and 362 total. On defense the Lions were led by Christian Paulsens five tackles and an interception. John Glynn had four tackles and Brenden Harrison had a sack. Coach Feuerbach said some things needed to be cleaned up but the effort was great and we got the win. The J.V. Lions next take on Forest City at home Thursday night September 1st at 6:00 p.m. at Lions Field.

Lions Open With Home Win Against Comets

The #3 (3A) Clear Lake Lions varsity football squad toughed out a hard fought victory Friday night over the Charles City Comets by a score of 13 to 6. Warm and humid conditions challenged multiple players, as cramping was a common theme. The Comets defense also proved to be a tough riddle to solve as well.

The Lions started things offense with a 3 and out and ensuing punt. The opening defensive sequence was highlighted by Tanner Tusha nearly picking off a pass. An unsportsmanlike penalty kept the Comet drive alive but Logan Kellogg’s 2 year run stuff and Chase Lester’s run support helped to end the drive. On the Lions 2nd drive, starting from the Lions 17 yard line, Tanner Truesdell and Cody Maulsby provided solid running. The Lions attempted a fake punt by handing the ball to Maulsby, but he came up 2 yards short of the first down. The Lions defense once again holds their own as the Comets started from the Lion 40. On the drive, Pete Swenson provided some solid run support on two plays, and Truesdell brought an end to the drive with a 4th down bat down of a pass. 3 and out for the ensuing Lions drive. Bryson Hamilton provided a 2 yard run stuff and teamed with Maulsby on a 6 yard sack on 3rd and 10. The ensuing Lions offensive possession started on their own 30 yard line and saw nice runs by Maulsby, Michael Keeran, and Gavin Sheakly. Quarterback Ozzie Adams hooked up with Maulsby on a 2 and 11 from the 48 for a 20 yard reception. The drive stalled in Comet territory when the Lions failed to convert a 4th and 6 as Adams nearly hooked up with Truesdell on a pass. The Comets started the next drive from their own 25 and got their running game going with multiple runs over 10 yards. The lions held their ground as Zac Bendickson diagnosed a swing pass and nailed the receiver for a 5 yard loss. On 3rd down the comets botched the snap and Kellogg was there to clean up the QB for a 10 yard loss. After the punt, the lions began the next drive at their own 20. Adams aired it out to Jake Kockler down the sidelines but the connection was not to be. The drive ends on a lions fumble on their own 31. The comets promptly put up the only score of the half on a 31 yard TD reception. A 3 and out for the lions ended the half with the score of comets 6 and lions 0.

The 2nd half saw a different lions squad as they came out fired up. Bryson Hamilton ended the comets first drive with a tackle for loss. Keeran got things going for the lions with a 20 yard punt return to the comets 36. Keeran, Tusha, Sheakly, and Truesdell gashed the defense with nice runs on the lions drive with Keeran finishing it off with a 1 yard TD drive. The offensive line was getting a much better push the entire 2nd half, and it showed on the opening drive. After a short drive by the comets, the lions, from their own 43, have a promising drive end with an Adams quick kick. On the next comet drive, Brandon Meyers brings the 3rd quarter to an end with a nice tackle for loss. 6-6 at the end of 3. The 4th quarter kicked off with Hamilton and Kellogg absolutely crushing a comet runner, sandwiching him for a 2 yard loss. Pressure on 3rd and 14 from Kellogg and Meyers end the drive. Keeran with another nice punt return of nearly 20 yards. The definitive drive of the night began at the comet 48. It began with an 8 yard scramble from Adams. Truesdell runs for 5 yards to pick up a big 1st down. On 3rd and 14 Adams hooked up with Luke Monson on a 10 yard pass play. On 4th and 4 from the comet 28, Adams dumped a short pass to Maulby, who worked his way into the end zone for a big touchdown. Logan Kracht added the extra point to make it 13-6 with 7:21 to play. The comets started their final drive from their own 45 after a big return. A quick 18 yard pass put the comets in lion territory. After a Truesdell 2 yard run stuff, the comets moved it to the lions 15 yard line. Kellogg and others stuffed the next run play. After a 2 yard gain on 3rd and 10, the comets were left with a 4th and 8 from the lion 13. The play saw the comets quarterback scramble, with Tusha and his teammates coming up with a huge sack, a loss of 18 yards, essentially sealing the deal. The teams traded a drive late in the game as the lions went on to seal the game by a final score of 13-6.

The lions visit Forest City next Friday night to battle the Indians.

Lions Valiant Comeback Not Enough

The Clear Lake Lions varsity football team had its season come to an end Monday night with a heart breaking loss at home against a tough West Delaware squad. The final score of the round two 3A playoff game was West Delaware 23, Lions 16. “Early in the game we were moving the ball like crazy and we kept putting the ball on the ground,” Clear Lake coach Fred Wieck said. “We had two turnovers in the first half and you just can’t do that against a quality team.” West Delaware (9-2) turned the two Clear Lake turnovers into a 14-0 halftime lead. That lead was extended to 23-0 midway through the fourth quarter led by a balanced running and passing attack of West Delaware. Senior running back Brandon Domeyer was a thorn in the Lions side all evening, rushing for 143 yards and a touchdown. The lions changed their fortunes with a rushing touchdown by Brent Tarr at 6:21 of the final period. After a successful onside kick, the lions drove the field again for another touchdown, this time a 2 yard pass from Ozzie Adams to Tarr. With the crowd in a frenzy and smelling comeback, the ensuing onside kick was recovered by West Delaware, who ran out the clock to salt away the game. “That’s the way we’ve always been,” Clear Lake senior center Austin Kessler said. “We’ve never given up. “We’re just really relentless. We go out and play every down like it’s our last. We didn’t give up to the very end.” Wieck, whose team bowed out at 10-1, said he was proud of his team’s effort down the stretch Monday night. “I thought our kids showed a lot of character being down 23-0,” Wieck said. “We could have just rolled over and quit and said ‘you win.’ “We didn’t and hung in there. We came down there and got the score and the two-point conversion and we did it again.” Wieck, whose team was in the playoffs for the 13th straight year, must replace 20 seniors. “They’re a great bunch — the seniors,” Wieck said. “They did a great job of hanging in there and playing and practicing hard. They’re a fun group to work with. They did everything we asked them to do.” The lions ended their season at 10-1, the 3rd straight 10 win season for the varsity boys squad.

FRESHMAN LOSE TO BOONE

The freshman lost to Boone 38-20 on Friday Oct. 22. It was a defensive battle for the first half. Boone scored the only touchdown of the half in the second quarter. Boone converted their two point conversion and would lead at halftime 8-0. In the third quarter the Lions got things going on offense when Carter Hand scored on a 1 yard run. Two point conversion failed making the score 8-6. The Lions would create a turnover late in the third quarter when Chase Lester recovered a fumble. The Lions would score a minute later on a 46 yard run by Lester. Two point failed and Lions led 12-8. Boone would score with 2:12 left in the third and convert two point conversion to take back the lead 16-12. With :38 left in the third Clear Lake would score again on a 79 yard run by Lester. Two point conversion attempt was good on a run by Lester. Clear Lake took the lead going into the fourth quarter 20-16. Boone got their running game going in the fourth and scored three touchdowns. Boone converted two of their two point conversions off of those scores. They would hold Clear Lake scoreless in the fourth making the final score 38-20. On offense the Lions were led by Lester with 201 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Lester also had 20 passing yards Hand had 18 yards rushing and one touchdown. Alex Gonzalez had 28 yards rushing. Jack Abbas had 15 yards rushing. On defense the Lions were led by Lester with 8 solo tackles, sack, and fumble recovery. Alex Webb had 3 solo tackles and 8 assists. Pete Swenson had 2 solo tackles and 7 assists. Carter hand had 2 solo tackles and 3 assists. Mitchell Jordan had 2 solo tackles and 5 assists. On special teams Logan Kracht had a successful onside kick attempt recovered by Lester. Coach Mike Lester said, “It was a tough way to end the year. A few mistakes kept us from winning this game. We came back strong after the half but just wasn’t enough. Coach Mac and I are proud of the way these boys performed this year. Look for them to have an outstanding sophomore, junior, and senior year. Thanks for all the support from parents, coaching staff, and everyone who is part of Clear Lake football!” The freshman ended the year with 5 wins and 3 losses.

Round One In The Books…

The #2 ranked Lions football team advanced to the 2nd round of the state playoffs Wednesday evening with a 21-7 victory over Oelwein. The cold and wind challenged both teams at times throughout the game. They don’t count style points in the playoffs, a win is all that mattters, and the Lions did just that. “It was a dog fight,” said Coach Wieck, who has the Lions in the playoffs for the 13th straight year. “Hats off to Oelwein.” Both teams battled back and forth throught the game with the Lions trailing 7-6 heading into the 4th quarter. The Lions took the lead 14-7 with 6:08 remaining in the contest when Ozzie Adams tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Brent Tarr on a fourth-and-two. “It was a good call by coach Wieck,” Tarr said. “They were sending a lot of pressure on the edge because we kept running power, power, power. “So we ran a set up play for it and I was wide open. It was a good pass by Ozzie (Adams).” The lions rushed for 386 yards in the contest with Paxton Farmer accounting for a career high 161 yards, Adams for 137, Elliot Neuberger 49, and Tarr 40. The Lions host a West Delaware team Monday night at 7 that was second in Class 3A, District 4. “We have to improve if we’re going to advance after Monday,” Wieck said.

Lions Wrap Up Regular Season With Perfect Record

The Clear Lake Lions varsity football team wrapped up its 3rd regular season in a row without a defeat with a win over Boone on Friday by a final score of 26-7. The lions used a ball control offense and smothering defense to frustrate the Toreadors. The first half alone saw the Lions run 43 offensive plays and compile 14 first downs compared to 13 plays and two first downs for Boone. First half scores by Ozzie Adams (10 yard run) and Paxton Farmer (6 yard run) made the score 14-0 at the half. Adams scored on another run of 25 yards in the 3rd quarter and Brent Tarr finished off the scoring in the 4th with a 3 yard scamper. Michael Keeran had a strong night on the receiving end catching 6 balls from Adams for 26 yards.

Defensively, the lions hounded the Toreadors all night. Boone rushed the ball 17 times for -4 yards. “The pass rush was obviously tremendous,” Coach Wieck said. “Their quarterback stood in their and took some shots.” The #2 ranked Lions host Oelwein (5-4) Wednesday night in their playoff opener. “We’ve done it before,” Wieck said of the short turnaround before the playoffs begin. “We know what we have to do. “It’s different for these kids. It’s a grind and I think they’ll hang in there. We’ll prepare realizing that every game could be the last if we don’t take care of business.”

J.V. Football with Boone 10-22-10

On Thursday night October 22nd the Clear Lake J.V. team headed to Boone and suffered a heart breaking defeat to the Torreadors 36-33. Clear Lake started the game well taking the opening kickoff and drove right down the field to take the lead on Brice Wilcke’s 3 yard touchdown run. Brandon Lo’s PAT was good and the Lions were up 7-0. It would stay 7-0 after the first quarter and the 2nd quarter fireworks started. Boone would score 22 points with their big play passing game. Chase Lester scored on his first carry of the game, a 70 yard run and Lester would throw a 50 yard touchdown to Zack Huey. Both conversions were no good for the Lions and Boone led at the half 22-19. The Lions would get the only score of the third quarter on another big Chase Lester touchdown run of 55 yard and Lester would score the 2 point conversion. Lions 27-22. Boone would strike first on a short field after a Lions fumble in the fourth to take the lead 28-27. Boone tried to run out some clock and time outs by the Lions forced them to punt. The snap was bad and the Lions recovered on the Boone 44. On their first play the Lions Cody Maulsby got outside and tap danced the sideline 44 yards to the end zone. The 2 pt. conversion was no good. 33-28 Lions with 1:18 left in the game. Boone did not quit and would strike on a 30 yard touchdown pass with 18 seconds left to defeat the Lions 36-33. The Lions J.V. finished the season with a 5-3 record this year. Coaches Feuerbach, Puttman, and Hamilton want to thank the players for great effort every week and adapting to changes every week it seemed. We look forward to seeing you keep improving at the varsity level in the coming years.
